Computing
Intent
At our school, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to understand and use technology creatively, safely and responsibly. Our computing curriculum introduces children to the key areas of computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Pupils learn how computers work, how to create and debug simple programs, and how technology can be used to communicate, create and organise information. Online safety is a key part of our curriculum, ensuring children know how to stay safe online, protect their personal information and know where to go for help if they have concerns.
Implementation
Computing is taught through a carefully planned curriculum using the Purple Mash platform to support learning across all year groups. Lessons introduce pupils to programming, digital creativity and online safety through engaging and purposeful activities.
Children also take part in physical computing, using devices such as Bee-Bots and BBC Micro:bits to explore programming in a hands-on way. Alongside this, pupils complete unplugged activities, including practical investigations, surveys and problem-solving tasks that help develop computational thinking without always using a computer.
Teachers model new skills clearly and support pupils in applying their learning through meaningful projects. Children often work collaboratively, including pair programming, where they design, test and improve programs together. This approach encourages discussion, problem-solving and resilience.
Impact
Through our computing curriculum, pupils become confident, capable and responsible users of technology. They develop strong logical thinking and problem-solving skills, learn to work collaboratively and gain experience in creating digital content and programs.
By the time pupils leave our school, they have a secure understanding of how technology supports learning, creativity and communication. They are well prepared to use digital tools safely and effectively as they move on to the next stage of their education and in the wider digital world.
